What does a five-star rating really mean?
In North Carolina, preschool and daycare facilities that
are registered can receive between one and five stars.
A rating of one star means that a childcare program
meets North Carolina’s minimum licensing standards
for child care, and programs that choose to voluntarily
meet higher standards can apply for additional stars.
TBOP is the only Jewish preschool in the Raleigh area
with five stars, thanks to our outstanding program
standards and the generally high level of early
childhood education (and other related degrees) held
by our teachers!
In addition, programs having a two-component license
can earn a “quality point” for enhanced standards
related to environment ratings and education
standards, which are awarded by trained evaluators
during on-site observations of the children and the
environment. These quality assessment scales were
developed through the Frank Porter Graham Child
Development Institute at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
What does this mean for your child?
In a five-star preschool:
When you are evaluating a preschool, ask the director if the school has earned a five-star rating, and if not, why. It’s important to ensure that the teachers caring for your child are well-educated and that the program in general measures up to the highest standards.
